Greek civilization has always expressed interest for the future of young people. Education was the best instrument to establish the values of Greek civilization and passing them on. Education has not, however, always been identical over the centuries, it has changed, it has adapted but it has been above all a cause for debate. It was the foundation of the Greek city, the polis and the reference of the aristocracy. The principles of the Greek paideia were fixed in the philosophy of Plato, who made educational discourse universal, letting it becoming culture. Our article establishes an analysis that starts from archaic Greek society, from the poetry of Homer and Hesiod, then moves on to the Greek tragedy of Aeschylus and Euripides and eventually recognize in the philosophy of Socrates and Plato the main coordinates that transformed Greek education into Greek civilization in a universal sense.

Abstract
